Bloody talk (women only)

"Bloederige praat", ik vond het een rare titel, dus daarom heb ik alleen een Engelse titel, maar de post is uiteraard in het Engels en Nederlands. Ik wilde het met jullie (en dan vooral de vrouwen) eigenlijk hebben over onze vervuilende menstruatie. Ik heb jaren maandverband gebruikt en veel mensen in mijn omgeving gebruiken tampons. Kijk eens hoeveel spul je dan iedere maand weg gooit (en hoe peperduur de aanschaf is), hoeveel dat dan over een jaar is en hoeveel dat over je volledige vruchtbare periode is.

Even een klein rekensommetje
Ik heb in mijn menstruatieperiode gemiddeld 5 dagen maandverband nodig (en dan 1 of 2 dagen inlegkruisjes, die tel ik nu voor het gemak even niet mee). Zo'n maandverband moet om de ongeveer 4 uur verwisseld worden, behalve tijdens de slaap (ja ik ga echt niet midden in de nacht opstaan hoor!) Dat wilt zeggen dat je op 1 dag ongeveer 4-5 stuks maandverband weggooit. In 1 maand is dat bij mij dus zo'n 20-25 stuks. In 1 jaar is dat dus 240-300 stuks. Ik ben op mijn 12e begonnen met menstrueren en ga er even van uit dat ik rond mijn 50e in de overgang kom. Dan zou ik in mijn hele vruchtbare periode ongeveer 9.120-11.400 stuks maandverband toevoegen aan de afvalberg (en ongeveer 3.500 euro kwijt zijn aan aanschafkosten)!
Nederland heeft nu ongeveer zo'n 8,5 miljoen vrouwen, waarvan zo'n 5 miljoen vrouwen in hun vruchtbare periode zitten (Bron: CDS StatLine). Stel je eens voor wat alleen al het maandverband en die tampons voor afvalberg opleveren!

Minder vervuilende opties
Ik was daarom snel op zoek naar een goede optie om die afvalberg te verminderen. Eigenlijk heb je 2 opties:
- Menstruatiecup. Dit is een silicone cup die je inbrengt in je vagina en die daar het bloed opvangt. Ze schijnen redelijk makkelijk in te brengen te zijn, met koud water makkelijk schoon te krijgen en gaan jaren mee. Er is een standaardmaat die bijna iedereen past, maar er zijn ook kleinere en grotere maten te bestellen. 1 cup kost rond de 30 euro.

- Wasbaar maandverband. Dit is maandverband gemaakt van stof waarin ook stoffen/materialen verwerkt zijn die bloed/vocht goed opnemen. Er zijn veel merken, waarbij sommigen wel een anti-lek laag aan de onderkant hebben en anderen niet. Sommige merken mogen wel in de wasmachine en droger, andere niet. Ze zijn vaak in allerlei kleurtjes te krijgen. Bij goed gebruik moeten ook deze een paar jaar mee kunnen gaan. De prijzen verschillen erg per merk, maar een starterspakket van 12 stuks is rond de 60 euro te verkrijgen. Je kunt ze eventueel ook zelf maken als je de juiste materialen hebt, tutorials daarvoor zijn op internet te vinden.

Persoonlijk vind ik de menstruatiecup veel eco-vriendelijker, maar ik houd niet van gefrunnik in mijn vagina en heb daarom ook nooit tampons gebruikt. Over de menstruatiecup kan ik jullie dus verder niks vertellen, maar een vriendin is deze aan het uitproberen, dus wie weet krijg ik haar ooit zo ver ooit een review voor mijn blog te schrijven ;).

Eigen ervaringen
Ik ben zelf begonnen met een probeerset, omdat er zo enorm veel verschillende merken zijn en ik wisselende verhalen las over deze merken. De conclusie van velen was dat het echt een persoonlijke keuze was. Dit was mijn starterspack:

Ik zal mijn ervaringen even bespreken, van linksboven naar rechtsonder:
*ImseVimse Normaal (Wit met rode rand): Dit is vrijwel de goedkoopste die je online kan vinden, maar ik vind het wel de beste. Het is een lekker groot wasbaar maandverband dat het vocht goed opneemt en dat goed in je onderbroek blijft zitten. Deze gaat niet snel schuren en ik voelde mij gewoon erg veilig bij dit wasbare maandverband. Er zit een anti-lek laag in.
* MAM paars maandverband: Dit maandverband is redelijk vergelijkbaar met die van ImseVimse, maar toch vond ik ImseVimse net wat prettiger qua formaat en is deze ook nog eens goedkoper.
* Lana Luna inlegkruisjes (nummer 3 en 5): beide zijn gelijkwaardig aan elkaar, alleen zit bij nummer 5 het printje onderaan i.p.v. bovenaan. Ik dacht zelf dat me dat niks uit zou maken, maar ik heb toch de voorkeur van een printje aan de bloed-kant, omdat het wit heel snel lelijk wordt. Beiden hebben geen anti-lek laag, waardoor ik me er toch minder veilig in voelde.
* Ella's house maandverband. Dit maandverband is lekker zacht wanneer je het voor het eerst voelt, maar het schuurt dan ook wel sneller en het is ook behoorlijk dik. Zeker op de fiets had ik echt last van dit maandverband. Daarnaast is het de smalste van de maandverbanden en voelde ik mij er niet echt veilig in. Deze heeft een anti-lek laag.
* Mam Ecofit inlegkruisje. Dit inlegkruisje is prima voor de dagen dat je nog niet zeker weet of je al ongesteld moet worden en of als je menstruatie nog op een laag pitje zit. Er zit een anti-lek laag in.
* MAM paars inlegkruisje: vergelijkbaar met Mam Ecofit, maar de voorkant loopt erg spits toe, dat is vragen om doorlekken! Deze heeft wel een anti-lek laag.

Persoonlijk investeer ik niet in inlegkruisjes, omdat ik dit absoluut niet kan dragen op zwaardere dagen. Ik investeer liever een paar euro'tjes meer voor het grotere ImseVimse maandverband, zeker omdat je veel omwas hebt.

Hoe wassen?
De ImseVimse mag in de wasmachine, maar zolang je geen wasmachine hebt waarbij het het centrifugeren lager kan instellen, zou ik dit niet doen. Bij mij begon bij alle merken na 1 keer wassen al de rand te rafelen en heb ik daarna alleen nog maar met de hand gewassen. Als je met de hand wast en je knijpt ze goed uit en hangt ze te drogen, kunnen ze in principe na 24 uur al droog zijn. Ik droog ze bij mij op de badkamer en dit gaat eigenlijk altijd wel goed, hierdoor heb je voor je maandelijkse cyclus minder maandverband nodig en dat bespaart weer kosten. Wassen moet je toch iedere 1-2 dagen, want anders is het niet hygiënisch. Of ik op een juiste manier met de hand was, weet ik niet, maar belangrijk is wel bij bloed dat je eerst koud voorwast en liefst niet te vaak wasverzachter gebruikt (omdat dan het absorptievermogen minder wordt). Bij mij wordt het wit wel snel lelijk, de rode bloedkleur blijft er toch altijd een beetje bruinig nog inhangen. Hieronder kun je het verschil zien tussen een gebruikte ImseVimse en nieuwe:

Hoe bewaren?
Het wasbaar maandverband zet je vast met drukknopjes. Als je ze gebruikt hebt kun je ze makkelijk opvouwen tot een soort envelopje (zoals bij de rode op onderstaande afbeelding) en kun je ze in een (apart) tasje meenemen. Als je dan thuis bent is het wel het best ze zo snel mogelijk te wassen of het bloed eruit te laten trekken. Ik heb als ik ongesteld ben altijd een emmer koud water op de badkamer waar ik meteen mijn vuile maandverband in gooi (na even uitspoelen onder de kraan). Dagelijks moet het water ververst worden en dan kun je ze iedere 2-3 dagen met gemak (hand)wassen.  

Momenteel heb ik een starterspakket gekocht voor ongeveer 57 euro en heb ik een natuurlijke zeep besteld die goed tegen bloedvlekken zou werken, dus ik hoop dat deze nieuwe beter wit blijven. Hier zal ik jullie later nog meer over weten. Ik ga nu kijken of ik het met deze 12 stuks red om een volledige menstruatieperiode te draaien inclusief de omwas. Als dat zo is zouden de startkosten dus rond de 60 euro liggen. Hieronder het pakket:

Dit pakket bevat 3x inlegkruisje naturel (eerder het formaat van een gewoon maandverband), 6x maandverband normaal en 3x maandverband nacht. 

Ik ga dit wasbare maandverband lange tijd gebruiken. Zelfs doordat je meer moet wassen is het ecologisch vriendelijker en als ik ooit de stap durf te zetten om de menstruatiecup durf uit te proberen is dat nog beter.



Bloody talk for women, a little bit of information about a more eco-friendly approach to menstruation. If you think about the amount of tampons and sanitary pads that are thrown away, this amount is huge! I myself use sanitary pads and a lot of my friends use tampons. Just think about what you throw away during your menstruation per day, month, year and life.

Small calculation
My menstruation period lasts about 5 days in which I need sanitary pads. About every 4 hours you need to refresh them (except during your sleep, I am not goig to wake up in the middle of the night!). That means I throw away approximately 4-5 pieces per day. I use them for 5 days, so per month I throw away about 20-25 pieces. In one year that is already 240-300 pieces. I started my menstruation at an age of 12 and probably won't go menopause once I am 50. That means I will use about 9.120-11.040 sanitary pads in my life. In such a small country in the Netherlands, about 8,5 million people are female and about 5 million of them are now in their fertile years (thus menstruating) (source: CDS StatLine). Image the amount of trash that is already only caused by those sanitary pads and tmapons!

Less polluting options
I was therefore looking for better options during my menstruation period and essentially you have 2 good options:
*Menstruationcups. These are silicone soft cups that you put into your vagina to catch all the blood. You can easily wash them with cold water and I have heard most people don't even find it too difficult to put it in. You can use it for years and the standard size fits most people, of not you can also order smaller or bigger once. The price is approximately 30 euros.

*Washable sanitary pads. This is a sanitary pad made from fabric and other materials that take up blood and other bodily fluids very well. You get all kinds of brands with different colours and materials that are used. Some can be put in the washing machine and drier, others can't. Also important is that some have a protective layer to prevent leaking. You can get a starterspack for about 60 euros, but you can also make them yourself with tutorials online.

Personally I find the menstruationcup more eco-friendly than the washable sanitary pads, but I don't like to fiddle around in my vagina, and therefore also never used tampons. The washable sanitary pads were my best option.

My own experience
As said, I don't even like tampons, so it is not very likely I will ever use the menstruationcup. One of my friends is using them though, so I hope one day she is willing to write a review for my blog. I first bought a starterset, as you have many brands who all have their pros and cons. What you like is really a personal feeling, but I will let you know my experience. This was my pack:

Starting from the top left to the bottom right:
*ImseVimse Normal (white with red edge): This is like the cheapest one you can find on Dutch order websites. It is pretty big, soft and absorbs a lot of bosily fluids very well. It also stays on its spot pretty well and I felt pretty secure using this one. It has a layer to prevent leaking.
* MAM purple sanitary pad: This one is similar with the one from ImseVimse, but I liked ImseVimse a bit more, especially because of the bigger size and better price.
* Lana Luna pantyliner (number 3 and 5): both are similar to each other on quality points, but with number 5 the colouful print is at the bottom instead of the top. I always thought that wouldn't matter to me, but I like the print on top more, as the white turns ugly pretty fast. This one does not have a layer to prevent leaking.
* Ella's house sanitary pad. This on is very soft on the first touch, but also very thick and scours faster than the other brands I could test. I especially disliked this one on my bike. Also from all the sanitary pads instead of  a pantyliner, this one was also the smallest and therefore I felt less safe. This one has a layer to prevent leaking.
* Mam Ecofit pantyliner: This one is completely fine for the days you think you might start your menstruation or the really easy days. Is has a layer to prevent leaking.
* MAM purple pantyliner: Comparible with Mam Ecofit, but the front is very small and asks for leaking. This one has a layer to prevent leaking.

Personally I don't invest in pantyliners, as I can't use them all the days and you already need to wash the sanitary pads.

How to wash?
The ImseVimse can be put in the washing machine. My experience is that you need to put it at a lower centrifuge rate though, as mine came out of the washing machine a bit destroyed already; the edge was letting loose a bit. I therefore wash everything by hand. If you wring them after washing and hang them to dry, it takes about 24 hours for them to dry. I always hang them in my bathroom. If it is possible to use only one pack by washing them every 1-2 days, you will safe yourself money (also the best for hygiene reasons). I am not sure if I was them correctly, but with blood it is always important to first wash them with cold water. And don't use fabric softener often, as then absorption quality goes down. After a while the colour of, especially the white ones, will be a bit ugly though, as you can see here with my ImseVimse comparison of used and new:

How to store them?
The washable sanitary pads mostly use with push buttons. When you take them with you or used them you can also easily fold them in a kind of envelope, as shown in the picture below (with the red one). If used, you can put them in a seperate bag. When you are home you should wash them as quickly as possible or store them until you wash them. First put them under a cold tap until most of the blood is out and then put them in a bucket with cold water. Make sure that you refreshen the cold water in the bucket every day and wash all the collected sanitary pads at least every 2-3 days.

I just bought a starting pack of ImseVimse for about 57 euro. I also ordered a natural soap that could help with getting the blood stains out better. I will let you know if they stay more white when I use that soap. I hope the 12 pieces are enough to use in my full menstruation period, also in combination with washing them. If so, the starting costs could be around 60 euro. Below is the pack I ordered (and the soap):

I hope to be able to use these washable sanitary pads for a long period of time. Research suggests they are more eco-friendly that the sanitary pads you throw away, even though you have to wash them. I hope I can ever use the menstruationcup, because that is even better. But for now I am statisfied.
